Earn 6 Figures as an Esthetician With Your Own Business

Creating your own business as an esthetician is one of the reasons most of us pursued the career in the first place.

But an entrepreneurial spirit, big dream, and passion for customer service will only get you so far.

If you want to build a six-figure business, there’s more to the equation. We’re looking at key areas to focus on when building a successful brand.

Let’s get down to it!

1. Focus on your niche within the beauty industry

With so many different specialties in the beauty industry, it’s easy to think that you need to offer something for everyone. But that’s not always the case. Estheticians provide unique services that other salons don’t. When building your business, you should first look at what areas of skin treatment or hair removal showcase your special skills. Decide which services offer you the best opportunity to shine and focus there.

Your niche could be facials, microdermabrasion, or waxing. If you have a medical esthetician license, you can also offer laser hair removal and injectables, increasing your earning potential.

Medical spas generate more income, on average, than traditional esthetician establishments (although I created a 7-figure wax and microblading salon). They come with added liability, but going in that direction with your business can enhance your bottom line.

2. Efficiently manage your time

Small business owners are always pressed for time. Especially if you’re running your own salon, you’re probably working with clients and managing the business simultaneously. It might work out while your client list is small, but when you’ve got big dreams, it can feel like too much.

Plan one day a week to work on administrative and marketing tasks so they don’t get left by the wayside. If you can, hire an accountant, a part-time administrative employee, or digital team to help you reach your full potential without burning out.

3. Build a dedicated team

As you add members to your team, ensure they align with your business model. Build relationships with them based on mutual respect and positive regard. Let them have a sense of ownership over their work and recognize their contributions. It’ll feel like more than just a job, and they’ll feel empowered to help you build your business and client list.

When you bring on new talent, have some training programs or onboarding for them. This way, they’ll clearly understand your approach to skincare and client services.

Always keep this in mind: There are no self-made millionaires in business, there are only team-made millionaires.

4. Customer service and experience is paramount

Happy customers are return customers, plain and simple. When you design your salon spaces, keep their experience in mind. Of course, bring your aesthetic and personality along, but think about what your clients want and need. Even small things like music and scent can affect their feelings about your services.

Your client’s first impression of your spa is frequently online or when they book a session. Make sure you’ve got a good infrastructure in place and answer questions promptly. Helping clients as soon as they walk into your salon matters, too.

Clients who feel valued and respected will refer you to their friends and acquaintances.

Unhappy clients are an unavoidable thing in the health and beauty industry. But remember that they just want to be heard most of the time. As your business grows, it’s prudent to have policies in place so your employees and clients know what to expect.

5. Grow trusted relationships with your clients

As we mentioned, customer relationships are key to building your business. Developing a relationship involves communication, something you can model to your clients. When you’ve provided a service, follow up with them within 24 to 72 hours to see how they’re doing.

Sometimes, clients new to a treatment modality don’t know what to expect in recovery. Even if you’ve educated them and provided post-care guidelines, your call can reassure them and build trust.

Beyond that, connect with repeat clients you haven’t seen for a while or who’ve canceled multiple sessions. A few minutes a day can make a difference in maintaining relationships with your community.

6. Leverage social media and other marketing strategies

Social media and email marketing are popular ways to keep your business in front of your clients. Some business owners try to juggle running a business and an effective marketing strategy at the same time. It can be overwhelming if you don’t have the right approach.

You can plan posts several weeks or months in advance as part of your administrative day. You could also offer perks or giveaways through email or other means that engage your customer base. Make sure that you pay attention to trends on social media to capitalize on the platform.

And, if all of this sounds like too much, hire a social media specialist or digital marketer. Even though it’s an added expense, it might help you go viral!
